7 myths of social media

Social media

When Thomas Cook asked his namesake airline for a free trip to Paris on their Facebook page, he was halfway joking. But LowCostHolidays.com turned the joke into a real-time marketing win by sending Thomas and his friend to see the Eiffel Tower.

Last week, I had the opportunity to speak at the Kansas City International Association of Business Communicators (KC/IABC, because that’s a mouthful) monthly lunch event. The topic was the 7 myths of social media. Well, it started as the topic. Then it was the 7 deadly sins of social media. But after putting the deck together, I ended up with a third theme — 7 things we need to stop saying about social media.

So here they are…the 7 things, that is. And the corresponding deck, which you can also find here on SlideShare. If you have any questions after perusing it, happy to discuss further.

1. I don’t have time for social media

2. I need a Facebook page…and I’ve gotta be on Pinterest…oh yeah, and my boss asked about Instagram…should I be on the Tweeter?

3. Let’s do outreach to influencers so we can make this movement go viral

4. You can’t measure the true value of social media

5. I’m a social media specialist

6. That social media crisis stuff won’t happen to us

7. That’s great, but we aren’t Zappos…or any other company like Southwest that has received accolades for it’s customer-centric social media efforts
